I'm back after too long of an absence, typing on a computer we now refer to as Lazarus. With that being the case, I guess I can call my friend Michelle the geek Jesus.
A couple of weeks ago Lovey emailed me a frantic note: CALL ME NOW!!!! Apparently, my beloved PC was taking forever to boot up and going through a disk check. Then it just shut off.
When I got home that night, I opened it up, reseated everything and tried it again. No luck. Unplugged everything and just tried to get power through the power supply. Same thing.
As I grumbled at work about how I have to buy a new computer and have most likely lost nearly everything on it (I performed only a minimal backup just before the disaster), Michelle said, "Bring it in and let me have a look at it."
"Really? You'd do that? What do you want for doing it?"
"Legos."
"Legos?"
"Legos."
I went out and bought a tub of bricks for her at lunch.
After a couple of days of tinkering with it, Michelle greeted me with good news one morning. "You need a new video card and a power supply. It's the weirdest thing. I think one blew the other, but I can't tell which order." She provided the power supply. Luckily, I had a spare video card.
So instead of having to wonder how I would going to scrape together the $400 I would've needed for a new machine (Lovey said, "I'd just work extra hours."), a $9 box of Legos did the trick.
It's so wonderful to have geeks as friends.
